The Cecropia moth (Hyalophora cecropia) is North America's largest native moth, known for its impressive 5-7 inch wingspan and striking reddish-brown, black, and white patterns with eyespots. As giant silkworm moths, they have a short adult lifespan of about two weeks, as they lack mouthparts and don't eat, focusing solely on mating. Their life cycle includes a large, colorful caterpillar that eats voraciously before spinning a tough, brown cocoon where it overwinters, emerging as a moth in the spring to reproduce.
